Spring/Summer 2011 Trends by Cassandra Hipolito

WOMENSWEAR:

“The Sheer Maxi Dress and the Tassel Detail”

For Spring/Summer 2011, the jersey maxi dress is a trend of the past. Now, the maxi dress goes see-through! Its style is very feminine, soft and flowy. Sheer, thin and light fabrics are the key essentials of this trend. However, the draping of the sheer fabric should be well manipulated or it should have a layer underneath, so that it won’t show too much, in order for it to be worn by women with different body types, and most especially, by women who think wearing a see-through clothing is too provocative and outrageous.

The Tassel detail will be popular this Spring/Summer 2011. Usually, tassels are seen on accessories such as shoes, bags and belts, but for S/S 2011, it will be seen on clothes as well. “Tassels originated thousands of years ago and throughout their history were used as symbols of status: both military rank, and religious order. In 16th and 17th century France passementerie, the art of tassel making, was a booming one, with ornate handmade tassels representing wealth and power.” (www.fashionising.com). Now, it is an impeccable craftsmanship seen as details or accents on women’s fashion clothing.

What goes around comes around...

 Women's trend

Fringes are often associated with a boho chic and laid back look, however this season red carpet gowns and ensembles that are enriched with this fab detail shows a high class look of the dresses. The collections of Anna Sui and Roberto cavalli managed to popularize the fringe style this season.

Women's trend

Polka dots fashion has been around for many years and this season it makes a good comeback.
With a strong retro feel, many famous designers rolled out lots of polka dots styles in their Spring/Summer 2011 fashion shows.
Moschino Spring 2011 collection was all about stripes, polka dots, flowers, gingham checks and color splash.  On the whole, Moschino 2011 Collection was playful yet wearable collection filled with polka dots.

Origin:
An early recorded use of the term "polka dot" is in 1873 in Godey's magazine, Volumes 86-87, Page 389.] The pattern is named for the dance of the same name, but there is no conceptual connection linking the pattern to the dance. Instead, the name was settled upon because of the dance's popularity at the time the pattern became fashionable. Many contemporary products and fashion also adopted the name.

Footwear trend
Kitten heels are making a good comeback this season,it is the perfect accompaniment to ladylike '60s dressing, A style popularized by iconic actress, Audrey Hepburn and recently revived by first lady Michelle Obama. Prada & Stella McCartney featured  this shoes on the runway.
 What is a kitten heel?
Kitten heels occupy the space between flat shoes and sex-bomb high heels. They're a small slender heel of 5cms (2 inches) or less. The heel usually curves inwards from the back of the heel, giving them a bit more stability than a stiletto.( http://www.wikipedia.com)

Accesories

This 50s and 1960s popular trend is back! Cat eye glasses are definite women’s must have for spring 2011. These hot glasses caught everybody’s attention in Jeremy Scott runway show, models rock the runway in beautiful garments and sizzling cat eye sunglasses.
Origin:
Cat-eye glasses are a form of eyewear mainly for women. They are thick-rimmed glasses with the arms of the glasses joining the lenses at the very top corners. Audrey Hepburn's use of them in the 1960s movie Breakfast at Tiffany's was notable. They were mainly popular in the 1950s and 1960s among fashionable women. (Wikipedia.com)

Minimal to BOLD

Makeup trend

Natural make up maintain its popularity until this season, “Natural beauty cannot be topped by anything else” so no wonder  DOLCE & GABBANA, LACOSTE, and VERSACE used this kind of makeup, simple but can still manage to look trendy and fabulous.

Make up trend

Lip color such as red, orange, as well as hot pink are in this season. As shown in the picture Fendi and Gucci  showcased this look.

Hairstyle trend

This season braids are in, hairstylist brings in freshness from basic braid style to complex braid patterns and side braids.

Erdem and LAMB have used the age old braids with a twist. They used multi braids crisscrossing the entire length and width of the hair, alternating with some loose hair same as Lacoste, they used multiple front braids to add interest and to instantly draw attention to the models features, particularly the eyes.

Cropped

Men's wear

The key trend for men this season is cropped/capri pants, Marc Jacobs by marc Jacobs showcased this collection its all about American sportswear and grunge looks but with sophistication.

Origin:
Capri pants were first designed by European fashion designer, Sonja de Lennartin 1948 and they became popular in the United States during the 1960s, largely due to the influence of the popular television series The Dick Van Dyke Show. The character of Laura Petrie, the young housewife played by Mary Tyler Moore, caused a fashion sensation – and some mild controversy – by wearing snug-fitting capri pants during the show's run. After a drop in popularity during the 1970s through the 1990s (though Uma Thurman wore them in Pulp Fiction), capri pants again became a dominant trend during the 2000s.] Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal wore capri pants in the majority of his matches before 2009.The pants' name originated from the Italian isle of Capri, where they were first made popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The American actress Grace Kelly was among the first movie stars who wore capris on the island. They are also known as clam diggers.

SPORADIC SPOTS : Menswear

This spring,
Science, art and spontaneity splash
to create the splatters on menswear
Just like those graphically... erm... graphic garbs from
Kenzo,  Jean Paul Gaultier, and Dries van Noten.

Not merely a chemistry class accidental,
splatters add quirk and color to the tailored suit of the corporate male.

Bottom line, Quit the stern face go have fun!

MORI GAL (FOREST GIRL) : Women swear

Girls seeking nostalgia, simplicity and carefree life.
They were tired of the wired world and
the everyday haste of a seemingly meaningless life full of material desires,
they have come to their own
fantasy dress up world
attuned with the forests
(as if the world still have some forest. Illegal logging, anyone?) .

A cult-style in Japan  circa 2006,
best described with girls wearing A-line outfits,
layers and layers of organic fabric, some vintage dresses, all in muted pastel colors,
as if they came from the lonely girls in story books or in other words,

Chanel made a floral version toned down with some plain parts of the garment and styling.

Alexander Mc Queen retained its signature graphic style, matched different versions  of  prints  and fabric weights on a similar color palette.

Kenzo Stripes, Florals and more quirky prints is subtle palette. Its Icelandic meets MORI GAL to our eyes.

Contrast is the name of Galliano's game.

MEN'S WEAR TREND
The Just Cavalli Spring/Summer 2011 show brought brazen glamorized funky denim treatments.
Artful denim pieces were bedecked in studded pearls, flower-appliqués and bleach splatters.

JEWELRY SPRING/SUMMER 2011
For spring 2011 there was a complete change in attitude and move away from the minimalism look from fall. The necklaces were large, sparking a return of the bib necklace from a few seasons ago. Chokers returned to the runway, reminiscent of the choker trend from roughly a decade ago. There were also cuffs on the spring/summer collection 2011. The cuffs were bold and featured stones, beads and other embellishments which could easily blend together with a choker or bib necklace.
Jewelry is back with a vengeance!  This is a great trend to shop your closet and look for those bib necklaces from a few season ago as well as those cuffs and chokers from ten years ago. The styles are fresh and very different bold earrings were in style.

SHOES SUMMER/SPRING 2011

Shoe Collection for Spring/Summer 2011 is all about Colors, Incredible Design, High Heels and platforms.
High heeled-Lace shoes are great worn with skirts, shorts, and skinny pants.
