Spring/Summer Trends 2011

ON WOMEN'S WEAR:

For Spring-Summer 2011, runway fashion is heralding the rise of prints and patterns, a probable continuation to the A/W nordic/nomadic trend where pattern play and layering up had been notably evident. Another inspired version of this fashion movement plus a few more key trends makes its reappearance in the D&G RTW S/S 2011 Collection:
and the KENZO RTW S/S 2011 Collection:

Women's Wear Top Trends from KENZO & D&G:

* Print & Pattern Play
environmental and garden prints will be in full bloom next season as showcased on the ramp. This summer will be filled with cabbage rose patterns in bubble/petal silhouettes, florist-like numbers, inter-cultural inspired stripes and zigzags and soft nature stamped designs. Prepare to mix and match and go all out in playing with contrasts and coordinates as you pair pattern on pattern separates.

*Color Craze
The season is livened up by color as hues go bolder and brighter. Striking shades of yellows, greens, pinks and oranges will saturate the scene, another notch up from this autumn's already colorful palette. Watch out for eye-catching tints that will make you stand out from the monochromatic crowd.

* Feminine, Flowy and Floral
A trend in contrast to fall's masculine movement will be something young, flirty, and dainty fresh. The woman makes a comeback in feminine ruffles, drapes and dresses. Make statements in long boho dresses, cutesy tops and wide leg bottoms.

* Long Lengths
The fifties trend extends itself to the coming season in modest hemlines, square necklines and tight waist silhouettes in line with the female look. I addition to this trend are ankle- length jumpsuits and overalls, gypsy skirts and paysanne dresses.

 ON SHOES:

* Bold & Colorful
Shoe trends mimmick women's wear staples in bold and colorful hues in plain fabric patchworks or printed pattern combinations. Summer will be all about frolicking in colorful charming footwear topping off fresh runway fashion versions

* Strappin' up.
Styles in summer shoes are made up of straps and buckles. Following the bootie and closed-toe hype are peep-toe and ankle strap styles which reveal a bit of skin and foot for those sun-kissed days.

* Height by Platforms.
Sky-scraper heels and platforms are still in and fashionable even in the midst of summer heat. Variations seen on the runway are espadrilles wedges and japanese-influenced wooden heels.

ON HAIR & MAKE-UP:

 KENZO S/S 2011
 CHRISTIAN DIOR S/S 2011

 This season’s all about bringing bold colors back for full visual impact. This is in contrast to the previous season’s minimalist and neutral color palette. Makeup artist—also labeled as ‘master of colour’—M. Tom Pecheux was ecstatic to bring color back to the runway.  He does this by putting bold-colored pigments on the lids (as can be seen in Kenzo’s spring/summer 2011 look). He says that it’s about creating a very visually appealing and fun look. Black was not used in his palette because as he emphasizes, “Just colour everywhere possible!”. M. Tom Pecheux did Kenzo while Pat McGrath gave color at Christian Dior and Loewe’s shows in Paris.
 One other way of adding color is by creating a striking and bold-colored lip. According to Peter Philips, Fendi’s makeup artist for this season, Karl Lagerfeld wanted the look to be ‘graphic’. This can be seen in Fendi’s spring/summer 2011 with a strong pink color palette. It is used with a very simple and natural looking eye makeup giving the lip its desired attention.
 FENDI & YSL S/S 2011
Designers as well as hair stylists this season prefer a sleeker and cleaner hairdo. Sam McKnight gives Fendi “graphic fluidity” with a blunt-cut do, adding extensions on the models’ hair as needed. Another hair stylist, Guido Palau, talks of how his polished version of an up-do for YSL’s spring/summer 2011 collection shows women’s “power and sophistication”.

ON MEN'S WEAR:
 DOLCE & GABANNA S/S 2011

Classic. This is what Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have shown in their Spring 2011 collection. With a color palette geared towards the basics such as black, white, and neutrals, these two designers continue to capture their audience with clean and classic cuts which show sophistication and great craftsmanship.
Annie Lennox plays in the background and sings with her sultry voice as the gorgeous Dolce and Gabbana models walk down the runway. Watching them is like wanting to fall in love with the beautiful Italian man. The show was all about being able to capture and express emotions; this, we believe, is the classic Italian feel.
For Dolce and Gabbana, spring/summer 2011 is all about the classics. Above is a neutral-colored classic blazer made in linen. It is paired with the same linen fabric for the vest and a button-down white long-sleeved top. This semi-formal ‘done’ look is made more casual by wearing it with folded shorts and gorgeous shoes. Apart from this look, Dolce and Gabbana played with their traditional tuxedos, while their other looks were more casual as they used distressed denim jeans, knitted sweaters, striped tops, and simple polo shirts.
The men carried woven leather duffel bags and wore woven rope belts as accessories. The collection was as classic as classic can be. This is how men should pull off the sexy Italian man look—very sleek and chic yet manly.
